Black Friday is the biggest shopping day of the year, and there’s no better place to experience it than in the shopping mecca of New York City. This event takes place the day after Thanksgiving—this year, it falls on November 25—and it marks the commencement of the holiday shopping season. Black Friday in the city is not as chaotic as you might find in other locations, but it is still characterized by a shared joy for shopping. 

 

Many of the biggest department stores have annual Black Friday deals, as do the stores along New York City’s hottest shopping streets. The bargains are far from the only draw of spending Black Friday in Manhattan—the festive aura of holiday shopping is out in full force during this time.

Bloomingdales 

Spoil yourself or your loved ones during Black Friday by shopping at this luxury department store, beloved for its vast clothing selection and its classic brown bags. Their flagship store on 59th and Lexington will be open from 7am to 10pm on the 25th. Bloomingdale’s is even having an early sale online: from the 22nd through the 27th, they have deals on clothing, shoes, home decor, handbags, and much more. 

Saks Fifth Avenue

Renowned department store Saks Fifth Avenue also has an annual Black Friday sale. This high-end retailer is the perfect place to spend the day; it has ten floors that include everything from a café to menswear, jewelry, designer clothing, and makeup. It opens at 9am on Black Friday, but the sales usually continue through the weekend. 

Apple

Looking for new tech? Apple is known for its Black Friday sales, which are usually the best deals they offer. Instead of limiting deals to the day of, they usually last for four days. Often, you can save more than $300 on iPhones and iPads. Apple has countless stores scattered throughout New York City, but the one closest to The Marmara is the one by Grand Central. 

Soho

One of the city’s hippest shopping districts, SoHo—short for ‘South of Houston’—is one of the best neighborhoods to explore during Black Friday. This sophisticated area has everything from Louis Vuitton, Rag & Bone, and Intermix to smaller boutiques and gift shops. One of the best destinations in SoHo is the MoMA Design Store, which offers an incredible collection of decor, furnishing, gadgets, and more. 

Hudson Yards Mall

This upscale shopping mall is a must-visit on Black Friday, for its massive selection of shops and its slick interior. Completed in 2019, this mall has it all: Lululemon, Brooks Brothers, Cartier, Rolex, Stuart Weitzman. Hudson Yards is the perfect place to shop throughout the day—the stores will all offer varying discounts, and you can enjoy a view of the Vessel and the Hudson River through the mall’s glass facade. 

Macy’s Herald Square

Shopping aficionados will find no place better for a long day of shopping than Macy’s Herald Square, the largest department store in the country. This flagship store is also the sponsor of New York’s iconic Thanksgiving Day Parade, so it is filled with holiday goodness. At over 2.5 million square feet, shoppers can spend well over a day in this Macy’s. The department chain begins their Black Friday pre-sales on the 20th, but they last all the way through the 26th.
