Rockefeller Center

Rockefeller Center

The Christmas Tree and ice skating rink tend to get all the attention, but Rockefeller Center has much more to offer. It is a complex made up of 14 limestone buildings. It is a gleaming example of art integrating with architecture in midtown Manhattan. You will see beautiful examples of murals, sculptures, metalwork, and mosaics.

History of Rockefeller Center

John D. Rockefeller is the benefactor behind Rockefeller Center. In 1928 he leased the land from Columbia University. In 1931, the first Christmas Tree was erected. It was during the Great Depression, and the workers at the center pooled their money to purchase a 20-foot balsam fir tree. They then decorated it with handmade ornaments. In 1932, construction on the Plaza began. It was completed in 1939.

During WWII, the center was turned into a Victory Garden that grew cabbage, tomatoes, and corn for the war effort. In 1952, the Today Show began filming in one of the studios. During the Cold War of the 60s and 70s, the basements were turned into shelters.
