History of Times Square
The story of Times Square is one with ups and downs. The area began as a horse exchange in the 1890s. William K. Vanderbilt, the grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt, was a major proponent and businessman in the area. In 1904, the city was evolving and changing, resulting in significant changes to Times Square. The first subway system opened with a stop at Times Square. In addition, The New York Times moved into the area, leading to the naming. The square thrived up until the Great Depression. Unfortunately, the theater business on Broadway declined, which put a strain on Times Square. Crime rose as a result.
Over the next several decades, the area saw a roller coaster of good and bad years. This culminated in the worst of times during the 70s and 80s when crime, drugs, and homelessness were at an all-time high. The 90s and early 2000s brought an end to this. A major effort was undertaken to transform Times Square into a cleaned-up and family-friendly place. Disney helped this by opening its Broadway version of “The Lion King” in 1997.
Today, Times Square is one of the city's most popular and safest places for tourists.
