Free Things to Do

New York City is a metropolis where the best of the best gather. You can easily find luxury accommodations, world-class dining, and high-end shopping. A trip to New York City can be full of the finer things in life. However, not everything you do in New York needs to cost money. There are plenty of enjoyable things to do and see that don't cost you anything. So, get the full New York experience by adding one or more of these free activities to your itinerary.  

Summer Concert Series

Open Air Theatre

Every summer, the residents of New York come out of their homes and spend time outside. One of the most popular activities is to head to the local park for a concert or performance. For example, The Public Theater hosts free Shakespeare in the Park in Central Park. Bryant Park hosts movie nights. There are musical concerts and plenty of other free events that take place in parks all over the city. 

Walk Across the Brooklyn Bridge

The Brooklyn Bridge is an iconic landmark in New York City. Built-in 1883, it has become a National Historic Landmark with the National Park Service. Take an early morning stroll across the bridge, and you'll see stunning views of the downtown skyline. Mornings are the best time to go, as the bridge tends to get crowded in the afternoons and early evenings. Spring and fall are the best times of the year to go, as the temperatures aren't too hot or too cold.

Central Park is an enjoyable place to spend time throughout the year. Spring brings blooms and cherry blossoms, summertime is perfect for picnics, in fall, the foliage looks as if it's on fire, then winter it looks like a winter wonderland. You can take bird-watching tours, walk around on your own, admire the many bridges, or take a walking tour.  

Times Square

Because Times Square is essentially a pedestrian-dedicated street intersection, it is free to visit. No visit to NYC would be complete without a trip to Times Square. You'll see street performers, flagship stores, and larger-than-life billboards. For the complete experience, visit during the day and night. It is breathtaking to see all of the lights of Times Square at night.

Staten Island Ferry

It may sound surprising, but you can ride the Staten Island Ferry for free. Not only do you get to spend some time out on the water, but it also gives you a unique view of the city. The ferry also gives you a great view of the Statue of Liberty. Head out just before sunset for some beautiful photography opportunities.

Attend a Live Taping

It's not every day that you get to see what it takes to produce a television show. It is free to be an audience member, and you get to see the show's stars up close. For example, you could see the live taping of The View, The Tonight Show, and several others.

Little Island

Visit New York City's hottest new attraction. It is a floating green space sitting on the Hudson River. You can stroll; through the gardens, take the audio tour, or meditate in one of the quiet spaces. Several events and concerts take place in the park throughout the year and are also free to attend.  


New York City is a ball of energy that just does not stop. It is incredibly diverse, so there is something for everyone. You can enjoy the best of the best in hotels, restaurants, and entertaining. However, it is sometimes nice to get out and enjoy the simple things in life by doing one or more free activities.
